Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies by William Shak

Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies by William Shakespeare. Jaggard & Blount,
London, 1623. First edition, first folio, pp. XVIII, 908. Dark calf leather
spine with titles in gilt, double gilt decorative rolls and gilt leaf ornament.
Dark brown endpapers with gilt edges. Elaborate title page, frontispiece with
first-state portrait, complete edition with leaves intact, containing Troilus
and Cressida and its prologue, Romeo and Juliet ending on Gg. Roman and italic
text types, cursive for headings, various larger romans and cursives in
preliminaries. Text in double columns, 66 lines, bold headlines and catchwords,
pages box-ruled, woodcut headpieces and tailpieces and initials. The first
authorized edition of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare and in terms of
editorial theory the closest we have or are likely to have to any final
published text authorized by the author, in the sense that it is the published
text authorized on the author's death by his friends and closest colleagues.
If you are not familiar with what the First Folio is, the First Folio is
considered to be the very first published collection of Shakespeare's plays. It
was compiled by the colleagues of Shakespeare John Heminges and Henry Condell
back in 1623. It is believed that 750 copies of the First Folio were published
in the 17th century of which only 235 copies still exist. The Folger Shakespeare
Library in Washington D.C. has 82 of them. I have many prestigious editions of
Shakespeare. While I enjoy them all, I am particularly fond of this volume.
It is first and foremost a paragon of scholarship, though I admit that it is
perhaps of limited interest to many because the style of writing is currently
unusual, but in the presentation it is a work of art. It is the closest you'll
ever get to owning your own first Folio, perhaps the best Folio ever. I enjoy
reading and owning finely made books. This volume is about as finely made as a
First Folio of Shakespeare is likely to get. It is beautifully bound and the
book in its entirety is a pleasure to own and to use. For those who care for
such things this edition will be the very impressive pride of your bookshelf.
